How to make the Passive

1. The Passive is made with a form of 'to be' + past participle e.g.,

The game was won on penalties.

2. Most past participles are made with the verb + ed - but many are irregular e.g.,

send - sent, go - gone, teach - taught.

3. It is the form of to be which changes the tense of the Passive verb. These are the Passive tenses:

a) Present Simple Passive:

A web page is written with html.

Football is played at Wembley.

Books aren't used by students anymore.

b) Present Continuous Passive:

The web is being expanded at 1% a day.

How fast is the web being expanded?

The web isn't being expanded very fast.

c) Past Simple Passive:

Many people were killed in the riots.

How were the people killed?

Soldiers weren't killed in the riots.

d) Past Continuous Passive:

People were being sold as slaves last century.

When were people being sold as slaves?

People weren't being sold as slaves by 1920.
